Fees in Hoikuen in Japan

Now you must wonder how much for hoikuen in Japan.

But there is no fixed fee for everyone.

Monthly costs for hoikuen are calculated according to your family income and structure, and this payment scale varies according to your municipality.

In this article, I will share the payment scale used in Sasebo, Nagasaki compared with national standars.

Costs for hoikuen are calculated based on your family income and structure.

*For family who has income overseas, childcare fees are calculated by estimating the amount equivalent to the amount of munipcipal residence tax based on documents that enable an estimate of income from overseas.

Over 3 year old class

For children in category 1 and 2, childcare is free of charge for "set time".

Fees for school lunch, school bus, school materials, etc are still charged for category 1 and 2.

(Fees for school lunch is included in fees for hoikuen for category 3.)

Fees for lunch, materials, etc

Fees for school lunch and snack are around 4,500 yen/ month.

Usage of school bus is optional and fees are between 2,000 yen - 4,000 yen/ month.

Materials including books and stationeries are expected 500 yen - 1,000 yen/ month.

*You might get a discount or be waved for fees for school lunch and school bus depending on your family structure and income.

Discounts for siblings

Costs for hoikuen shown above is for the 1st born child and for other siblings, you will get a discount or be waved.

With a child who attend to hoikuen, youchien, or nintei kodomoen, the younger siblings who attend to hoikuen get discounts.

Fees for 2nd child from the one who already attends hoikuen, youchien, or nintei kodomoen is half the price of what you expected.

3rd child and on are free of charge.

If you fall in Class C2 in above table, from 2nd child, it is free of charge.
If you fall in Class B or C2, C1, C of municipal residence tax less than 576,99 yen, your 2nd child is half of the price whether or not your 1st child is in hoiuken, youchien, or nintei kodomoen.

Others

There are more rules!

If you have a child who attends school for children with special needs or school on base, you are also eligible for a discount!

Single parent

As show in the table above, if you fall in class B1, B, C1, or C, and are single parent, hoikuen fees will get cheaper for your 1st child as well as your 2nd and on.

After school childcare in Youchien

If your child attend to youchien with category 2, fees for after school childcare is free of charge.

However, if your child is in category 1, each time when your child stay at youchien after school, you will be charged.

Fees vary by youchien.

However, with a newly established system and if your child is in a situation of need of childcare, you will be reimbursed up to 450 yen a day, up to 11,300 yen a month.
